Visit to Salies-de-Béarn, city of salt
From our campsite in Salies, discover Béarn and its heritage starting from Salies-de-Béarn. The town’s old-world charm and unique connection to salt are its appeal. Long before it became famous for its spa treatments, it was a simple saltwater spring that shaped its history. According to an old story handed down from generation to generation, a wounded boar guided men to this salt water. This unexpected discovery marked the starting point for its development.
Over time, the region’s inhabitants made the most of this natural resource. Salt, also known as “white gold”, put Salies-de-Béarn, also known as the City of Salt, on the map of strategic locations. A village gradually grew up around the spring, with typical houses built on stilts.
Over the centuries, salt water has revealed other virtues: beneficial for the body, it attracts curists and travelers alike. Thermal establishments were born here, and even today, the baths continue to welcome those seeking soothing and natural treatments, whether for rheumatology, gynecology or childhood development disorders, or for a moment of relaxation.
